Description:

This course is available as a live-streamed course via Zoom only and there is no in-person component.

This course helps learners make sense of their belief system and juxtapose their worldview against others who may or may not share similar perspectives. We welcome those of all faith (or having no faith) with the only prerequisites being an open mind and mutual respect. Please note that this course is offered via Zoom only and has no in-person component. You can access the live-streamed sessions and interact with the rest of the class and the teacher, or you can choose to watch the video recordings of the live sessions, which are usually available 1-2 days after each session (which allows time for our video editors to edit and post each session to the course web page).

What is Agnostic Theism, and what it is not

Session 1: Wed 9 Nov 2022

This session begins with definitions of what Agnostic Theism is – and what it is not. It focuses on drawing the parameters around which the topic will be discussed and explored so that all participants can be framed along the same expectations regardless of their personal belief systems and perspectives of others. Participants will have the opportunity to express how their belief system fits (or does not) within the context of agnostic theism.

The Functional Aspects of Religion

Session 2: Wed 16 Nov 2022

This session discusses the functional aspects of religion such as a means of social construct, lifestyle doctrine and expressions of faith, and offers participants the opportunity to contextually reference their belief system against one or more of these functional aspects of religion (if they subscribe to one). If the discussion allows, further exploration into what it means to be ‘religious’ (as defined by the individual) will be attempted.

Philosophical vs. Faith-Based Agnostic Theism

Session 3: Wed 23 Nov 2022

This week's discussion delves into the philosophical positioning of agnostic theism and compares this view against a faith-based positioning of agnostic theism. Participants will be invited to share how they might position their belief system(s) in the context of this contrast and how this might strengthen their beliefs (or expose any vulnerability).

Reconciling Agnostic Theism

Session 4: Wed 30 Nov 2022

In our final session, we'll check on how participants have reconciled (or not) any new understanding of Agnostic Theism with their own belief systems and discuss the next steps in their explorative journey. The emphasis will be on ensuring that participants continue to feel comfortable with their belief systems (or are given the necessary resources to support their continued efforts to resolve any internal conflict of ideology).
