Description:

Introductory Te Reo Māori, Part 2

• This is Part 2 of a three-part Introductory course taught over the course of 3 successive school Terms (take as few or as many as you’d like!) specifically designed for beginning Te Reo learners who wish to continue their Māori language journey. All of our language programmes focus on acquiring reading and conversational skills, and learning about local culture and tikanga Māori.

• Our courses are designed for busy people: we do not expect you to study outside of class, nor do we assign homework (unless you’d like some!). Come and spend 16 class hours per Term (eight 2-hour weekly classes) studying Te Reo and learning about Māori culture, and have lots of fun too!

• This course continues with basic Māori conversation, vocabulary and introductory grammar. Learning about Māori tikanga is a part of our study.

• Subsequent Term courses continue with Introductory Māori, Part 3 and continue to include additional reading and comprehension practice, grammar, vocabulary, and conversation and will continue in the same time slot for the duration of the full course. Intermediate Māori will be offered in 2025.

Meet our Instructor

Te Reo Māori instructor Ariana Stewart

Kia ora! My name is Ariana, and I am a descendant of Ngāti Hauā, Raukawa and Te Arawa iwi. While I cherish both Wellington and Tokoroa as my homes, I currently call Hamilton my base. I have a diploma in Te Reo Māori and work as a tutor for the full immersion Reo Māori course (Te Tohu Paetahi) at Waikato University. Additionally, I recently completed a term teaching at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. I love creating fun and comprehensive learning experiences. I also believe that through learning Te Reo Māori, we also immerse ourselves in Te Ao Māori, the Māori world—a beautiful aspect of holistic learning. With an interactive teaching style, I foster wānanga (conversations, discussions) to cultivate a safe learning space. My passion for Te Reo Māori is continually expanding, propelling me to seek new knowledge, embrace fresh experiences, and cultivate a deeper connection with Te Ao Māori.

• Those unable to attend the scheduled date and time of the actual class sessions, or those who need to miss a class or two due to previous engagements or unexpected illness, can watch any or all of the live-recorded video sessions on their computers, laptops, tablets or mobile devices and study at their own pace and in their own time.

• Detailed instructions on how to access our distance learning components will be sent after completing your registration. There are no additional fees for this service. However, distance learners will need access to a desktop or laptop computer with a good quality web-camera (tablet devices and mobile phones can also access our live-streamed classes), a built-in microphone (most modern laptops have built-in microphones) or a headset with a microphone. You will also need to download and install the free Zoom software on your computer or device. Those accessing the video recordings will be able to do so with a simple web browser on any device.

• All prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST.

• Unwaged includes students, seniors, retirees and unemployed.

• Prices remain the same regardless of your chosen method for accessing this course.
