Description :

Sunil Fenandez-Ritchie is a loving father with an intellectual impairment and cerebral palsy. He’s also a high-performing athlete, who has set New Zealand T20 Paralympic records in the 800 metre, 1500 metre, 5000 metre, 10,000 metre, half marathon, and full marathon events. Join Sunil and his father Garth in a special Earth Diverse workshop, as they discuss Sunil’s journey from budding athlete to the international stage. This course is for school teachers, PE instructors and Sports coaches, disability service providers, and parents and families of children with disabilities. The first two sessions are classroom-based, with a practical third session in the field.

Meet our Instructor

Sunil Fernandez-Ritchie

Sunil Fernandez-Ritchie is an athlete with an intellectual impairment who has represented New Zealand at International Paralympic Committee sanctioned events in New Zealand and overseas. Sunil has set noteworthy New Zealand T20 Paralympic records in the 800 metres, 1500 metres, 5000 metres, 10,000 metres, half marathon, and the marathon. This is all the more impressive because Sunil also has the physical impairment of cerebral palsy. Garth Ritchie is Sunil’s father who until 2020 was an official International Paralympic Committee accredited classifier of track and field athletes with intellectual impairments. He has worked at a number of Paralympic events overseas.

Location:

All in-person classes are held at the EarthDiverse offices and classrooms temporarily located at 401 Grey Street, Hamilton East, Hamilton. Please enter via the Cook Street entrance (see map below). Those looking for parking for our evening classes can park just in front on the main entrance in any of the available car parks via the Cook Street entrance. On-street daytime parking can be found on Cook Street, Grey Street or around Steele Park. There is a single Disability car park located a few steps from the front door. Plenty of space for bicycles too!
